Description

Sandy you asked me in your comment to my photo of Whites Mill if I was going to show a photo of the Wolves, so this one is for you. This is one of the statues that I had mentioned in a previous post they are a group of 27 statues placed around the town of Abingdon, Virginia. The colorful statues were each painted by a local artist and had decorated the town until October, when they were auctioned off to benefit Advance Abingdon, the town's Main Street organization. Sporting flags, eagles, butterflies, tuxedos and even polka dots, each statue had a theme and a name, from Hollywolf Incognito to Earth, Wind and Flowers. The wolf sponsors paid $300 to $500, depending on the size of the statue, and artists put hours of work into each one. Wolves were chosen for the project because the Abingdon area was once called Wolf Hills. According to local lore, legendary frontiersman Daniel Boone camped at the base of what is now Courthouse Hill while traveling through the area in 1760 during the night Boone's dogs came under attack by the wolves emerging from a cave at the hills crest prompting Boone to give Abingdon its first name - Wolf Hills. If you would like to see the other wolves in the collection click the link below. By the way I was using my laptop to edit this photo in Photoshop I normally use my desktop and the screen is a bit smaller on this so I hope it looks okay. Thanks again everyone, and have a good night. Off to watch American Idol lol.... nite nite. Who's Afraid of Virginia's Wolves Thanks everyone for your continued interest and support, I appreciate you all. thumb_2008832.jpg

That's a cool wolf! They did the same thing with horse statues in Lexington, KY a few years ago. It was so successful other cities tried it. Here in Somerset, KY it was tail-walking, six foot tall smallmouth bass! There are a few at the visitor center which didn't get auctioned off, I'll get a couple of pics.

LOL Michael well its going to go down to 13 degrees here this weekend and my house is going to be invaded by teenage girls Friday night so how does this weekend sound... LOL I am sure it is much warmer in Houston this time of year. Do you think the girls will realize I am even gone??? lol Actually, I would love to see them, I love how certain towns have different themes like that, here we have statues of black bears I will have to get out and capture some of them to share.

wolves are a great idea... in Saskatoon, it was pigs, in Calgary, it was cows... I think Toronto did Moose... but wolves are cooler!

Love your wolf and the colors looked great on my screen. Thanks for the "wolf link". There were some outstanding titles. I liked "Daniel and the Wolf" because I could see his silhouette in the painting. Interesting that you mentioned him today, since I just read that the Texas school board, wants to take Daniel Boone, out of future school books. Go figure. Great concept and I saw something like this in Toronto maybe 15 years ago. Dana
