Description

Memphis had another Ice Storm last night, also referred to as freezing rain. It's something we fear around here even more than we do progressives taking over our government. In an Ice Storm the precipitation comes down as rain, and then instantly freezes on contact. So the ice continues to build until trees, power lines, and whatever else can't stand the additional weight comes crashing down. The roads end up with a solid sheet of ice, offering no traction whatever when driving. Car wrecks everywhere! Mixed with a little sleet, like we had last night and it looks like snow. But trying to walk on it like you would snow will result in your feet flying fast above your butt. Last night was bad, but we've sure had worse. Back in 1994 Memphis experienced a devastating Ice Storm. At our house we were without power for over two weeks. Some people for over two months. Massive oak trees were either split in half or literally turned upside down with the root structure ending up on top. Never saw anything like it before. It was like the hand of God ripped the massive tree out of the ground and slammed it back in upside down! Although I'd mourn for the 2 or 3 hundred year old oak trees, I'd sure love to see how that would look when it flips! The weaker pine trees were mostly wiped out. I've been through more hurricanes in Florida than I can even remember, but the damage from that Ice Storm was equal to anything I've ever seen in Florida. Just different. At the time I remember thinking the damage resembled a white hurricane. But on the prettier side, the freezing rain paints a shinny coat of ice over everything, which can make some amazing sights. It may keep you from getting inside your car, but the trees and branches that can withstand the additional weight look absolutely stunning, especially backlit when the sun comes out. A sight to behold! This is a shot of the end of a Crape Myrtle branch in our yard. A couple of last year's pods are still attached, and everything has a solid coat of ice. Hard to believe that in 3 or 4 months there will be beautiful white flowers bursting forth at this same location. But for now mother earth remains in a frozen slumber. Watch out for those Ice Storms! marshall

I couldn't even begin to imagine what the 'ice storms' would be like. Great shot and commentary :)

I have always loved the way ice looks coating tree branches, pine needles and cones, the skeletons of trees like your crape myrtle. Even before you said "hurricane" that's exactly what I was thinking... it is the kind of result we have down here from a storm of a different kind. Mother Nature has wrath and beauty wrapped in the same package. She doesn't discriminate. She just Is. Thanks for the mental journey spawned by your photo this morning... be well.

My first winter in Tennessee was in 1994 and our back yard was full of pine trees, and when we started hearing this noise at first we had no clue what it was then realized it was the sound of trees breaking and falling I will never forget that sound we had a sheet of ice on our street, luckily the winters after that were a bit more on the mild side. I moved here from California and it was quite an adjustment to experience that first winter, but then I also got the thrill of the first, spring and fall... and it was all worth it. great photo!!
