Description
Chambéry has been the historical capital of the Savoy region since the 13th century. The Fontaine des Eléphants (Elephants Fountain) is surely the most famous landmark in Chambéry. It was built in 1838 to honour Benoit de Boigne's feats when he was in India. This statue, which represents the forelimbs of four elephants truncated in a column in the shape of the savoyan (savoyarde) cross was first hooted by the inhabitants who, annoyed to see elephants in their city, in a typical Gallic fashion nicknamed the statue 'les quatre sans culs',(the four without arse(s). It appears that now, these 'alien' animals have been accepted.
In the foreground there is the ad of a movie showing a comic European view of the Americans: Planet 51 : Alien malgré lui! (Alien despite himself).
Planet 51 is a Spanish animated film directed by Jorge Blanco. It was released in 2009, by Sony Pictures Worldwide. Some critics acknowledged the film as an E.T. in reverse.

Wonderful picture!

This is interesting. The film was released in the U.S. but not one word that it was a "foreign" film. Elephants, pedicabs and a bus, our spaceman is really lost this time. Nice history lesson. It seems that even when the French are angry they still have a sense of humor.

This is gorgeous...I have yet to see that movie, but I remember seeing advertisements for it when I saw "Surrogates" which disappointed me. Oh well. This is a wonderful photo and I love the collision of worlds here...the old world with the futuristic/animated world. Wonderful. I love the crispness and the color as well as the whole visual mood. This is brilliant.

Well, it could be worse...we have a statue of a giant baseball bat, and all we have is a farm team. Go figure.

Excellent image! I love the parallel lines of the movie ad and fountain. It's very interesting how a landmark that is despised at it erection, will later be revered. Wonderful architecture. When you take widely varying colors, make them pastel and add a lot white it looks beautiful. Love the history!
