Description

I took this photo a few years ago. At the time, I was advised to sell it to the local paper, but I didn't want to profit from other's misfortune. To protect the privacy of those involved, all I will say is this; Thankfully no one was killed. There were a lot of people in both vans and there were serious injuries. The accident was caused by speed and distracted driving. Please be careful out there. I think this photo, while not nice, is very expressive, and I wanted to show it for a while now. I gave this a violence advisory because when i see this I can't help seeing the very violent moment of the crash.

The reality of modern day life eh. Great shot. Whenever I am confronted with photographing a scene like this, there is always a little voice that tells me not to shoot as I must seem like a total ghoul. A friend of mine who takes shots for newspapers said that ignoring that voice and taking the shot is the essence of making it or not as a photo journalism.

I think this is becoming even more common as the auto industry adds more toys to sell their cars. More display stuff, GPS navigation, interactive radios, cell phones, texting. The list goes on. Even hands-free cell phones are just as distracting as without the hands-free option. There are several reasons why talking on a cell phone is more dangerous than talking to a passenger. 1. On a cell phone, the listener's brain is always trying to visualize who they are talking to, or whatever scene is around them. With a passenger, they know that information already. 2. Less understood is the poor frequency bandwidth of cellular equipment which automatically cuts off low and high frequency information contained in speech in order to carry more cell calls in any frequency spectrum. So your brain misses a lot of that information and has to work harder deciphering what is being said so you can understand the conversation, therefore more brain activity leaves less capacity to react and comprehend a change within the driver's view.

A grim warning. I don't even have a radio in my car.

Everywhere the same! Today I traveled during heavy snowfall. Many cars had no lights turned on and were far too fast. I was glad when I was home again.... Interesting and great picture!!!

Oh I cringe when I see this on the road side...we were stopped at a stop light one time gong home from work and some kid in daddy's car "didn't see the light" smashed us in the rear end...pushing us into the truck in front of us...what a mess that was. It never fails to amaze me how little of a thump can do so much damage...

Good lord, I'm amazed, but glad, that no one was killed. These vehicles are surely dead... Yes, being on the road now a days is literally taking your life in your hand...people yaking on cell phones,an epidemic of people trying to make the light before it changes and running red lights.... They just past a law here in New Hampshire that bans texting while driving. It shouldn't take a law...it should just be common sense!!
