Description

When close to a barn owl, there is the feeling of something very primitive. These young owls were on a perch at a rehab center, swaying back and forth together, shoulder to shoulder. They wanted me gone. A couple of clicks of the camera and I left. The nest tree was cut down and that explains three healthy owls together at the center. When these grow enough in size and ability, they will be released to the wild. Though one of the most efficient night hunters of mice, voles and other small critters the barn owl is endangered in many areas. Loss of habitat is one reason. Their lifespan in the wild is about 4 years maximum and the infant mortality rate is high. It is not common for the raptor center I visit to have barn owls. We are fortunate these were saved and hope they make it to the wild again as capable raptors.

Just wonderful to look at them, so close together. Very special shot you've made here. Thanks you so much for telling that story too. I'm very fond of owls. (haha, not in the way to eat, I hope you do understand(?)) In our garden, in the evening we can often hear a tawny owl.
