Description

This is a female Anhinga. The brown neck is the key ID, as the male has a black neck. They fish underwater and when they surface, only the neck shows for a few seconds before they are back underwater chasing their next meal. The underwater fishing soaks the feathers and when they are done they sit with their wings spread to dry out their feathers. They are about 35 inches (89cm) long with a wingspan of 45 inches (114cm). They have very similar habits to the Cormorants. Taken at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, February 2nd. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

I often see these soaring high in the skies....they like to drift on the air currents like the Vultures. Nice shot.

Capital capture of another species of avian I never heard of before, sitting atop all those sharp and spikey branches, Dana. Actually, it looks like a Cormorant, which the Japanese use for fishing.

This is amazing! I love her poise, it's so dramatic so pronounced, so utterly captivating! Great sense of color and mood as well and yeah, the drama is rich and engaging...at least I see this as dramatic: it's her pose mostly, but also the branches and how their shapes and her shape are similar in some ways, but so completely different. This is really great work!

This is a fantastic shot! I've been thinking of using this bird in my next picture. You've captured what I consider the most beautiful feature of this lovely creature, it's gracefulness. What a beautiful pose you've captured. Excellent shot. Thanks.
