This is absolutely far out. I know the Escher image well. I'm stunned how you have the staircase so accurately done. I can't imagine how you got it work...
CptPlanet
wow. I'd love to see that animation if you have some webspace...

That's amazing, not just the construction of the staircase itself, but the entire model of the building. Definately get that animation up, I have some webspace if you'd like me to host it.

Thanks, everyone, for the great comments. I had a lot of fun working on this, despite some hair-pulling. (Luckily, I have lots of hair.) I created a new page on my web site that has a 1.4MB Sorenson Quicktime of the staircase traverse I mentioned above. I'm hoping to have some time over the weekend to add some other stills and discussion. Here's the link: http://66.70.254.100/art/Hash/Escher/EscherSecrets.html

Escher would die! Imagine what he would do today with what we now have... I love it! And the movie loops just right! Perfect!

I've always loved Escher, have a wall in my room with lots of his posters. Excellent homage!

I agree with everyone... This is just top notch! Fantastic work. How this can be done on a computer... I can't understand!

Fantastic! I've been trying to do this for ages and gave up. But now I have your tip, I may try again. Great animation too.

The original Escher was an amazing piece - but I tip my hat to any artist to actually attempt to build the model and render it! Excellent work!

OUTSTANDING!!! What a monk's eye view, ha? Very well done! MC Escher also inspire me for my last image on my gallery. Congrats. You're on my favorites now.

whoa..really nice work!

This is excellent work. A great homage to a master of archeticture, patterns, and illusion. I remember seeing an animation of Escher's 'Roll-up" creatures in art class that blew me away. Escher was ahead of his time in that he seemed to create his own fractals, morphing, and warped space/time utilizing only his brain and lithography! Spinesmith: Kudos to your contribution, which I am sure took a great deal of talent and determination!
