Description

The latest (and final) version of this image before its premiere at Boskone (a regional science fiction convention). This piece was a bit of an eye-opener. The cheaper the render, the better this piece felt, since I was going for an old, retro-illustration look. I wound up blending a number of different layers that initially flattened the image, but ultimately gave it that "pulled from a really old magazine" look. This is part of a continuing series of images I'm developing as part of a storyboard for an idea I've been kicking around for years. A "discovered" illustration from a secret terraforming mission briefing (circa 1905) shows a small fleet of rockets shepherding rogue ice and frozen oxygen high above the surface of Mars, towards an impact near Stickney Base, on Phobos.

The graininess looks so awesome, and the warm colors--it's a nice piece all around. I love that you got away from the slick 3d look!
