Description

Yosemite Falls is the highest waterfall in North America. The total 739 metres (2,420 ft) from the top of the upper falls to the base of the lower falls qualifies Yosemite Falls as the sixth highest waterfall in the world. The falls actually consist of three sections. This is the upper falls (436 metres, 1,430 ft) as seen from the Merced River. The Ahwahneechee people of Yosemite Valley called the waterfall "Cholock" and believed that the plunge pool at its base was inhabited by the spirits of several witches, called the Poloti. An Ahwaneechee folktale describes a woman going to fetch a pail of water from the pool, and drawing it out full of snakes. Later that night, after the woman had trespassed into their territory, the spirits caused the woman's house to be sucked into the pool by a powerful wind, taking the woman and her newborn baby with her. So I kept my distance.

It always amazes me that when waterfalls just flow off the tops of rocks like that. It appears out of no where. What must it sound like standing there. Beautiful shot!!!

Beautiful image! I like the mist coming up from the falls. Very interesting, legend. You would think giving her a bucket full of snakes, when she was after water, would be punishment enough. I'm enjoying this trip through Yosemite!
