Viareggio is known, as well as home seaside tourism, for the Carnival, founded in 1873, with its majestic papier-mâché floats that parade along the "promenade". The official mask of the Carnival of Viareggio is Burlamacco, invented in 1930 by Uberto Bonetti. During the event, of great importance, there are also side neighborhood festivals that take place usually from Friday to Sunday. From an artistic point of view, Viareggio is known for eclectic, nouveau and deco and for being the city of artists like Lorenzo Viani, Uberto Bonetti, Alfredo Catarsini, Renato Santini, Mario Marcucci, Inachus Biancalana, Galileo Chini and Alfredo Belluomini. The city is an industrial center and craft, especially in shipbuilding, long known around the world. It is also known for fishing and floriculture. Viareggio is home to many events and awards including the Premio Viareggio literary Repaci, established in 1929, the Premio Viareggio Sport was established in 1985 and World Cup tournament in Viareggio Carnival, founded in 1949. Viareggio is also known in the historical-religious, among the most significant events of St. Anthony Mary Pucci and Clelia Merloni. The city is also known for having given birth to Marcello Lippi, the coach of the Italian national football team winning the world title in 2006. Geography The city is situated on the Tyrrhenian Sea, has 10 km of sandy beach, 6 of which run from the resort beach and 4 (almost the entire beach is part of the Regional Natural Park Flushing Migliarino-San-Massaciuccoli).
