Description

It looks that the good denizens of Chambéry are destined to be unsatisfied with their statues. This is the statue of the Sasson, a sobriquet meaning 'the fat, stupid woman' in the local Arpitan language. Made by the French sculptor Alexander Falguière (1831-1900),it was erected in 1892. The term Sasson, actually, is a familiar diminutive of Savoyard patois, ironically dubbing a henwtted female, more developed in body than in brain. The statue is an allegory meant to be a Savoyard woman with giant shoes, clutching a French flag. The monument was inaugurated in 1892 in ceremonies commemorating the centenary of the first annexation of Savoy to France at the time of the Revolution (November 1792, then the region was part of the Piedmont-Sardinia Kingdom, to become French again much later). The statue was confiscated by the Germans in World War II, and was found decapitated in a train station in Germany. In 1950 it went back to Chambery, and in 1982, the statue, restored, was put in its original location. The Franco-Provencal, or Arpitan, or Romand (in Switzerland), or patoà (in Italy) is a Romance language with several distinct dialects that form a linguistic sub-group separate from the Langue d'Oil and the Langue d'Oc. Today, the largest number of speakers reside in the Aosta Valley, an autonomous region of Italy. The language is also spoken in the Italian Alpine valleys near Turin and Ivrea, two isolated towns in Foggia, and in rural areas of the Romandy region of Switzerland. A bit of postwork helped. Thank you for your kind comments.

A very good explanation of the appropriateness of this statue that I do not know! By aujiourd'hui cons, there is a stigmatization of fat people, boasting a certain thinness almost skeletal! Respect people with their forms ... as these machines are known as supermodels, and not always ambassadors of beauty!

I thought the French of the 19th century liked their women 'robust' (Renoir, etc.). Fascinating history and wonderful image.
