Description

Castle of Ventimiglia, built in 1316 by Count Franz I Ventimiglia. The present building is the result of several revisions, which make difficult the reconstruction of its original appearance. A simple rectangular plan shows a mix of styles outside at that time influenced the whole architecture of Sicily. The volume in cubic recalls the Arabic style, the corner towers echo the square Norman tower roundabout refers instead to the military construction Swabian. The earthquake in the early nineteenth century disappeared blackbirds, shape Ghibellines, dovetail, and also city walls, towers and arches, now fallen into ruin. Some defensive structures of the thirteenth century, and some quarters of the fourteenth century are still intact.
