Description

November 2002 and Phase 11A in the construction of the International Space Station will see the crew of the space shuttle Endeavour deliver and install the first port truss segment known as P1. The crew will also deliver and install a second Crew and Equipment Translation Aid (Cart) for use by astronauts during external EVA's. Between November 2002 and October 2007 seven more construction phases to station will be completed (LF1, ULF.1, 12A, 12A.1, 13A, 13A.1 and 10A) to enable the US core of the station to be finished. Between February 2008 and March 2009 construction phases 1E, 1J/A, 1J, ULF2 and 15A will be completed to bring the station up to a six person capacity with March 2008 also seeing the first European Space Agency (ESA) Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV - The Jules Verne) being launched to dock with the station. From March 2009 to February 2010 construction phases 2J/A, 17A, ULF3 and 20A will be completed with the first Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle being launched to dock with the station. This brings us up to where we are now with the station as good as completed. Only five more construction phases (19A, ULF4, ULF6, ULF5 and 3R) remain involving four more space shuttle flights and the launch of one Russian Soyuz for the station to be fully completed. During this phases of the construction operation the final flight of the space shuttle will take place (STS-133) bringing to an end the space shuttle programme. The pictures which follow todays will show the station how it is intended to look when fully completed in Earth orbit.
