This is the Hoof Fungus or Tinder Bracket, Fomes fomentarius. Common on deciduous trees especially birches, and in Northern areas in my country.

I'll have to go back in the spring when the gardens open again and look at the tree and the fungus. It might have been a poplar. Thank you for the info.........Della
