Whenever I see advertisements, I always think of the voice in George Lucas' THX 1138 the electric priest you confess everything to, especially if your government-prescribed drugs aren't working, or if your doses are unbalanced and thus "illegal." You'd go into a booth and say whatever you have to say while the recording of some smarmy guy makes the appropriate "Mmms" and "Aah" and the occasional: "Yes, go ahead." After your little rant or whatever, the voice then encourages you to "consume and be happy." I always get that impression whenever I look at Western Style advertisements. And the starkness of this image reminds me of other Science Fictional representations of ads in the same style, only they are more to the point: "CONSUME" they may tell you, and invariably, one of them says: "OBEY." Funny how sci-fi puts its finger on so many things that so few of us want to even acknowledge...and well...though this image isn't science fictional, I can still see hints and whispers of "OBEY" and "WE KNOW WHAT'S GOOD FOR YOU SO SHUT UP AND LISTEN TO US" emblazoned in Bauhaus Font somewhere just left to the range of human visual perception here. And yes, such exhortations are always written in bold capital letters, even if they're subliminal This is wonderful, and provocative work.
