Description

The Frari’s Basilica. The Capter House. Above the urn of the Doge Francesco Dandolo, in a lunette of the arch, is a delightful painting by Paolo Veneziano (active between 1320 and 1362), who founded the school of painting that would make Venice famous over the centuries to come. It portrays St. Francis and St. Elizabeth of Hungary presenting Doge Francesco Dandolo and his wife to the Virgin (1339). The work, still with a Byzantine rigidity to the figures, nevertheless shows some early overtures to the new Gothic decorative values. Detail: THE HOLY VIRGIN WITH THE CHILD
