Description

Which is Faster? A'a or Pahoehoe? Pahoehoe flows move forwards in tongues or lobes. They flow smoothly and are often formed by small volumes of hot, fluid basalt. The higher the volume of lava emitted the faster the current. A'a is more viscous, has a higher volumetric rate as compared to Pahoehoe. It moves slower than Pahoehoe and yet a'a will travel faster than pahoehoe. Pahoehoe more fluid will fill the lower spaces before moving on while a'a just run over and thru everything. Like the turtle and the rabbit....who won the race? Its a hot race! Aloha and thank you for viewing

One thing for sure in this race, the loser gets burned! This is a really interesting shot. Was the ground warm where you were standing? Just wondering if this stuff could suddenly come up under your feet.

whaleman...A'a usually flow if not always on the surface. But there are a lot of lava tube networks below us. Fresh lava could at anytime occupy those lava tubes beneath us again and work its way to the sea. Because the lava tubes keep the heat hot, lava can move fast. It could warm us up. Thanks for asking

That is so close I can see the detail in the crust riding on the top of the lava. I am suprised your boots weren't on fire. Great shot. Stay safe.

Yeah, I have to agree with Dave. Awesome shot, something very cool about the orange color in the lava and the foreground is awesome. The lava does leave some cool abstract designs and patterns when it cools. Well done!

This is impressive and I finally know how to spell those Lava Classification names. I remember them, and hearing the amusing story that their names are Polynesian in that wonderfully poetic way that defines either the way that they flow, or the sound you make when you're walking barefoot over some of it as it hasn't yet cooled all the way down, or the way it HAS cooled and left jagged upthrusts. I don't know how accurate that is, but it's amusing, and I can picture a bunch of barefoot Hawaiians scampering across warm ground grunting "A'a, a'a" until they reach where they're going. I love the intensity of this shot and I'll catch up on the rest of the series just as soon as I can. This is fantastic, though, and I'm glad I saw it.
