Description

Religion and I don't mix. I do have to admit, however, that some of these old churches are pretty spectacular. If you're going to put on a show, after all, it pays to have good props. This is a picture of Mount Carmel Catholic Church on Belmont Avenue, in the Lakeview Area of Chicago: taken on February 18th, 2010.

Great title, one of my favorite songs---cool foto too, and I know just what you mean about churches; their buildings can be pretty impressive!!

Yes Corey, you sound very similar to me when it comes to religion. But I don't begrudge anyone else who believes......each to their own I say!!!!!!

I agree that churches have some pretty spectacular architecture, and this is a great example! Those doors are magnificant. As for the arches ... hey ... if you're going to do arches, you might as well go all the way! Fabulous light and shadow. I'm happier on the outside of those doors, too. :)

Stunning work, Corey. The architecture is wonderful, of course, but the lighting and the passerby add to the atmosphere of the image. Well done.

I know this church so well...sort of. From the outside. Across the street...well, maybe not that remotely, but I've only been inside once, and that was because I was dragged in to attend Mass by someone who had a thing for Mass. I'm not Catholic so I had no idea when to sit, when to stand, when to curtsy, when to read a text with EVERYONE ELSE reading the same text, or when to engage in the ritualized sing-along. I was also corrected when I used the term curtsy rather than genuflect, but I have to say "Genuflect" sounds like an exercise machine rather than a ritualized gesture. Admittedly, the sense of drama was quite astonishing...I've seen Broadway musicals with less going on in them than a Catholic mass or African American worship service! And though I don't begrudge anyone their beliefs or their customs, I do rather like it when those beliefs and customs are not shoved down anyone else's throats and ovaries, or squeezed into their marriage beds. Live and let live is my philosophy, and what gets me about religion is the whole idea that it's okay to mind someone else's business, and condemn them for making choices that are right for them...all while using an anthology of ancient texts as support. Wacky! As for this picture, it's marvelous! I love the colder stone and the warm wood tones and that lone pedestrian really makes this stand out. I think it's because of his blue jeans and the dominant warm colors and shadows surrounding him. This is marvelous work.

I wasn't going to comment on this, because everybody else's beliefs is not my cuppa-tea and how the churches accumulating all this wealth to build monuments like this... nothing wrong with the architecture nor the photo you took, but I have to crit the horizon line, nobody mentioned it, but I would have preferred to see it boringly straight ! Hi Corey, I too admire classic architecture and here you have the rule of threes at work...well, rules in photography/art are only guidelines...so with no further rambling...good shot my friend. All the best words about light and, shadow have already been used...so I'll just jump on the bandwagon with auntietk on that subject:) I apologize for being missing for awhile...I've been gone more than I've been home of late.
