Description

The "mortar board" is a little worse for wear, I admit. It used to have a short horsehair "fall" on the edge. The rank of the wearer is major. The "tresse" at the top of the helmet's body indicates this. That would be the color-on-color brocaded silk band. Two bands would be a Lt Colonel, three a Colonel. The [embroidered ribbon] for junior officers (Lieutenants and Captains) is "gold" silk, like this, but a plainer weave. The wearer's name is penciled in the inside of the helmet body, but illegible. The thickness of the helmet body tells me it could stop a sword blow. However, since this is just before WWI, the odds of being struck by a sword are exceptionally small. Artillery claimed most deaths, not small arms. Against either, the protection is virtually nil.

An outstanding shot, once again of a piece of History from the changes war was fought.... Mind you, Cavalry was still in use in the WW2... The Polish charged tanks... So did the Russians.. You can imagine the results.... Though, the uniforms had changed vastly by then.... Great shot Allen... Rob

SPLENDID CAPTURE!!! ACTUALLY GENERALS THOUGHT MORE OF PARADES THAN BATTLEFIELD AS FOR UNIFORMS. WWI CHANGES ALL.

I believe we are looking at the origin of the term "Square head". IIRC, this term was coined to refer to Uhlans (light lancers)in the Napoleonic wars. The mortar board (best description I can think of too) topping was carried down to more modern headgear up to, at least, WW2 as a forage cap for the Polish forces. Great image.

A most excellent capture! The top makes me think of a Star Wars design for some reason! It looks futuristic to me. Can't explain why! A most delightful series you have here! Well done!
