Description
The name Chard was derived from the Saxon king' Cerde' and was granted it's charter in 1235.Powered flight was invented here by John Stringfellow in about 1850. His first plane to fly, unmanned and powered by steam, flew about forty feet. His second one hundred and twenty feet.
Artificial limbs were also invented here by a man called James Gillingham.
The first female Cabinet Minister hailed from here also. Her name was Margaret Bonfield and she became Minister for Labour under Ramsay McDonald's government in 1929.
