Description

This is a fairly large owl and not featured too often in my gallery as often as most others there, the Ural Owl is smaller than the Great Grey Owl, and much larger than the Tawny Owl, which it superficially resembles. Distinguishing features apart from the size are the pale, buffish grey-brown plumage, with copious dark brown streaking on the back, back of the head and underparts. It has a round head with plain buffish-grey facial discs, orange-yellow bill and small black eyes. The tail is long and wedge-shaped, with dark barring on the uppertail, and the wings are rounded. Flight is direct and purposeful, recalling that of the Common Buzzard which I was able to catch on the same day for a later posting.

i know you've been photographing birds for some time, but this may be the first bird shot I've actually commented on. It shows why you're masterful at it. You did catch the features you wrote about, obviously you're very adept at birds & their appearance. But it's also wonderful as an action shot, as it's amazing that the bird is caught as if it were suspended in air, as if it were 'posing' for you rather than flying (like it were saying, "could you catch me this way? I look really good this way..."). It has amazing stillness & composure for something that's so clearly in flight. Amazing. Then of course you have him right over a stone marker, which also appears as if he said, "could you catch me here? I've always wanted to be photographed over this." A fleeting moment that's nevertheless almost painted there; and the expression in the owl's face is marvelous. Great shot! Boy, I'm new to the camera, and I can learn so much from pictures like these. It's one thing to draw & paint these scenes, but to capture them with a camera? Just amazing.

fascinating, especially this shot, which show the big wings but also the big boy, which makes me wonder again, how flight works...smile
