Description

Fuerte de Niebla was built in 1671. A 1737 earthquake completely ruined the fort and it was rebuilt by order of Manso de Velasco. Fuerte de Niebla was one of ten forts that made up the Valdivian Fort System, a series of Spanish colonial fortifications established to protect the city of Valdivia from the Dutch and the Mapuche. The forts were built around the bay formed by Rio Valdivia and Rio Tornagateones. During the period of Spanish rule (1552-1820) it was one of the biggest systems in the Americas. It was also a major supply source for Spanish ships that crossed the Strait of Magellan. These forts are located approximately 320km south of Concepcion, the nearest city to the 8.8 magnitude earthquake. This picture was taken on 28 December 2003.
