------------- Nate’s Crew – Bad Attitude
Nobody had ever met a happy or cheerful Atlantean. There was reason for most surfacers to believe that no such creature existed. And there was a reason they all had that misinterpretation. No Atleantean willingly spends his life on the surface if he can avoid it. Most are there because they’re outcasts, or they’ve decided on their own to see what’s topside, or a dozen different reasons,… none of them pleasant. So, when one encounters that overly muscled, swarthy complexioned guy or girl with an obvious line of gills along their jaw line and webbed fingers and toes,… one just expects they’ll be rude, crude and socially unacceptable. One almost never expects them to be polite, or to see them wearing a Royal Marine uniform.
Lorak came topside at the age of 12, sent with an envoy to the Accriss of the Island federation, his uncle. The expedition was attacked by Slaad near the Island of Phlegos and only Lorak survived. He was rescued by a Sonntaglian Navy frigate plying those waters and taken back to Sonntaglia as a curiosity. After years as a cabin boy, his strength and speed began to show itself and he was turned over to a shore installation to be trained in the art of fighting. By the age of 18, he was an enlisted Sonntaglian Royal Marine. By the age of 21, he was an NCO under the command of Lt Nathaniel Scott. Their adventures sailing the Atlantean Ocean were many, but could have been more, and somewhere along the way, Lorak stopped thinking of the bottom of the ocean as his home. He lived shipboard, and occasionally ventured onto land in assorted ports from Clinomaru to Raidon, from Taipai to Friggia.
It was in the far east, in the Clinomaru port of Nakamura, that he and Nate ran into a strange old master. They watched as he defeated eight Ronin with a single stroke of his blade. Lorak was hooked. He pursued and pleaded with the man, eventually undergoing all manner of torment willingly to have the man teach him some of his art. All Lorak learned was that he had a very long way to go before he could call himself a Mempomaster. He returned to the ship and set sail again.
When the two of them were mustered out of the Royal marines when their tours ended, Lorak followed Nate to Mauritius. Dejected and unclear about his future, he fell into a depression. He was drunk, stunk to high heaven, and was in the process of taking on the entire crew of a Hellenian Corsair in a tavern brawl when Nate found him to tell him that he’d secured a ship and they were to be their own masters from now on. Lorak looked at him and belched,… loudly.
“Well, I can see that with a bad attitude like that, there’s only one place on my crew for you, my friend. First Officer. Get your head clear and collect your swords. We weigh anchor in the morning.”
