Description

Well, I finally got around to uploading the Eagle Owl as promised. This beautiful bird was one of many at the owl show we went to as mentioned in my "Owl Story" upload a while back. I included the image with the handler so you can get a sense of the size of this majestic bird. Below are some facts about Eagle Owls that I pilfered off the internet. Enjoy: The Eagle Owl, Bubo bubo, is one of the most powerful owls in the world. It is an inhabitant of Europe and Asia, and is a rarity in Great Britain. It is characterized by its very large size (26 to 28 inches long), the two tufts of feathers on its head and the large orange eyes. It is the largest of the European owls. This cousin of the Great Horned Owl is rust brown above with dark brown mottling, pale below with longitudinal streaking and blurred crosswise markings. It prefers to nest on cliffs, steep banks and in the abandoned nests of other large birds. Its prey includes rodents, hares, rabbits and large game birds. Despite its extensive range it is becoming increasingly rare and might be considered endangered. There are eleven species of eagle owls, six of them are in Africa. Verreaux's Eagle Owl or the Giant Eagle Owl (Bubo lacteus) is 26 inches long and inhabits open wooded areas in the western and southern areas of Africa. Its round face is outlined with a black ring and it has large, dark eyes and fluffy ear tufts. Plumage is light gray below and dark brown above.

Oh hon! I remember this owl and he was just magnificient! I remember looking at those 'furry' legs and thighs and wanting feel them. But, then looking at the talons at the end of those legs, I think I'll pass, LOL. And as I recall, he was QUITE the show off, spreading his wings and showing off! I believe I recall the woman saying that it was one of these owls used in the Harry Potter movies. Fantastic photo!

I don't think I've ever seen a owl that large. I'll bet they're the terrors of the neighborhood. Fantastic photos.

The ticking on the feathers is really highlighted and makes him look so soft, but those steely eyes are riveting.

OMG - he is wonderful!! In the forest behind our apartment seems to live an Eagle Owl (here called Uhu) but I can only hear his call (that sounds pretty scary). Fantastic photos, you really captured his majestic appeal!
