Description
I was given this a few years back by someone who was moving seeing me with my 8" Meade 2000 MM SC telescope. About the only thing I could find about it is that it is pre 1959 when the Navy Bureau of Ordinance logo was discontinued. It is categorized as a telescope but it looks like a gun sight. It is in a custom wood box. It Could be a spare. There is also a decal warning that the lenses are coated (Photographers know what this means)requiring special cleaning at the time.
UPDATE: There are crosshairs in the eyepiece

Gunsight...agreed. But, not certain for which one. Probably 3 or 5 inch guns, for shore bombardment, or from shore positions.

I was going to say also a scope for exceptionally large gun... long-range use would explain its original classification but with better scopes being developed it lost that tag. Wonderful shots.

I checked what rferences I have (ie: pictures of various deck guns) Couldn't find anything similar. I did check the Naval Gun Factory and according to what records I could find. It was called the Naval Gun Factiry after 1945 until your date of 1959. Neat shots, into the reference file it goes (as soon as where it came from becomes available). color me ?????
