Description

One of the trees native to the Marsh is the California Sycamore. The tree usually has multiple trunks that can be up to five feet in diameter. The leaves can be more than 18 inches across. It puts out hairy seed pods like these.

Very hairy! The top one looks like it has a lot of seeds ready to leave the nest. I like how the other one is on the end of the branch, like pompoms at the end of the ties of a knitted hat. Beautiful detail and light! Excellent capture!

"If your pictures are not good enough .. you're not close enough." -Robert Capa :-D Luv' it, Mark. One of my favorite subjects since I first picked up a camera has been 'the simple details of life which most folks busily pass by without noticing.'  It is evident from many of your images that this sensitivity is a key aspect of your creative inspiration. The tear [rip not teardrop] is wonderful. [ The degree of distinction between the depth of field and the rest of the frame. ] I have often found, to my delight, that Nature likes to assist her portrait photographers.  At just the right moment the sun will come out of the clouds and illuminate your scene like magic .. or a bee will alight upon a flower moments before you press the shutter.  Such blessings always come to those who recognize that there is no subject more beautiful or inspiring than the field of creation which surrounds us. Go make more!  ;-) Terry

They look like the pompoms we used to like so much on our wooly hats in the 50's! Not on the ends of the ties like Lucinda recalls, but on the top! I wonder what percentage of those seeds germinate and survive.

Truly amazing. And totally alien looking. I could see that being used in a science fiction movie. Great shot.

Simply beautiful. I didn't know that Sycamore leaves were that large. They are stately looking trees with wonderful bark. This is a stunning shot of it's seed pod the background is wonderful. Great detail.
