Description

Yesterday, Rendo member ocoee53 posted the image "Knapping" that took me back to when I was a kid. My dad, being part Indian and very much into Indian craft work has always had some sort of new project going. One was carving arrowheads like ocoee53 had posted. After I had commented, ocoee53 mentioned he'd like to see some of my dads work, so here are some shots...Enjoy! :-) 1. An assortment of the different styles baskets and boxes...they are all made of birch bark, the darker ones here have had images etched into the sides for decoration. He uses Sweet Grass and roots to sew the boxes together. The others here are decorated with porcupine quills. 2. Knives he has carved in entirety. He uses antler allot of the time for his handles. 3. Different shapes of the etched basket, he uses water and a knife to scrape designs into the birch bark. 4. Set of four boxes I took shots of for him at one time. If you can think it, he usually can put it on a box, or knife handle, cane, whatever. lol 5. These three boxes are kinda special. Dad has always said he'd make us a box each with something we would like on them. The first one here is the one he made me with the black bear, second is my younger sisters, this is one of the first designs dad started putting on boxes and the third with the rose is my youngest sisters (lunchlady on Rendo). 6. Number six are a few canes dad has carved. He does much more as well...and I've only just touched the surface as to how much work and effort goes into making any one of the items shown. You should see his bead work! I hope you enjoyed them!

most excellent your dad is a great artist and above all,the native culture must be given to further generations as well as not to loose .a lot has been lost already. the witheys with their diseases, and their greed, and the whiskey did a bad job.
