Description

MONTREAL SUBWAY The Montreal Subway (French: Métro de Montréal) is a rubber-tired metro system, and the main form of public transportation underground in the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Metro, operated by the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), was inaugurated on October 14, 1966, during the tenure of Mayor Jean Drapeau. Originally consisting of 26 stations on three separate lines, the Metro now incorporates 68 stations on four lines measuring 71 km (44.12 mi) in length, serving the north, east, and centre of the Island of Montreal with connections to Longueuil, via the Yellow Line, and Laval, via the Orange line. The metro system is currently Canada's longest subway system and the busiest in total daily passenger usage, serving an average of 1,000,000 daily passengers on an average weekday in 2009. In 2008, 291,6 million riders (transfers not included) used the Metro. According to the STM website the metro system has transported over 6 billion passengers as of 2006, roughly equivalent to the world's population. Montréal has built North America's most ambitious inner-city rapid transit scheme outside of Washington, D.C., serving the third-largest number of passengers overall behind New York and Mexico City and attracting the second-highest ridership per capita behind New York. The Montreal Metro was inspired by the Paris Metro and in turn is also the inspiration for the Lyon Metro and Marseille Metro, as well as the Mexico City Metro, all constructed a few years later, and all which also share the same rubber-wheel car design and similar Montreal Metro station architecture. Urban transit first came in 1861 where a first line of horse-drawn cars started to operate on St-Jacques street. Eventually, as Montréal grew, a comprehensive network of streetcar lines provided service almost everywhere. But urban congestion started to take its toll on streetcar punctuality, so the idea of a subway was soon considered. ART IN THE METRO Thanks Magik

L'ART DANS LE MÉTRO Merci Magik

I just left your Gallery - lol... ok... another comment... lets see, what to say this time...Hmmm? Well, right when I seen what you have here, I got a flash of a movie in my head, it wasn't a good flash - lol... it was a scene from "American Werewolf in London"... the scene? It's where the business man with a briefcase gets attacked in the subway and falls on the escalater... You see the wolf walking into the scene for the first time - If ya haven't seen it, I feel this was the best werewolf movie put together - ya aught to check it out.... nice pictures and arrangements by the way.

Excellent captures and collage! Montreal has nicer subways then New York. Cleaner and smell better anyway. ;D They had subways in L.A. at one time but they deemed them unsafe.

68 stations! I think we're still working on # 9 or 10 here. Heck, we just decommissioned the trolley buses a year ago or so.

for a small town boy like me... the Montreal Metro is world apart from our world, a world onto itself....I could spend days there and not see everything.... stark industrial designs.. modern, steel, concrete....a people mover.. very cool shots... more?
