Description
I've just discovered that it's St. Patrick's day, so I dedicate this picture to all the Irish people, people of Irish descent as well as to all those whose name is Patrick and its variants.
I shot this one somewhere in Ireland in the mid-1980s, and scanned it (with a bit of postwork). The camera was the glorious Pentax K1000.
Peat for me is connected with the smell of the fireplaces in the Celtic Fringe...and the gorgeous flavour of the whisky (whiskey) produced using peat water.
Peat is soft and easily compressed. Under pressure, water in the peat is forced out. Upon drying, peat can be used as a fuel. It has industrial importance as a fuel in some countries, such as Ireland and Finland, where it is harvested on an industrial scale. In many countries, including Ireland and Scotland, where trees are often scarce, peat is traditionally used for cooking and domestic heating.
Thank you for your kind comments.

A superb capture and narrative which brings to mind the two-year period I spent in Galway, close to Spiddal and the bog! Your capture and what you've written on the smell of burning peat are fantastic!...Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh!

Ah, Sandra, is there any other photo than a peat bog, that conveys St. Patricks' Day?? Very nice!!! Oh, yes, the use of peat in the making of whiskey. I didn't realize that the use of peat was in response to not having trees for fuel...wonderful information!!!!

Way cool... and the fact that this is shot on a K 1000 bespeaks talent and skills... 35mm was the standard for sooo many years (I still shoot occasionally on my 25 year old Yashica FX 7) that it's good to get back to the old school ways... even if for just viewing! an honest reminder of a lifestyle!

I still have an Olympus OM-1 in the closet. If it weren't such a drag using film, I'd still employ it. Guess we're in the digital age now. Nice shot of the bog. Well done.

Peat is also a great preservative. Every so often they find someone who fell in 2000 years ago. A wonderful image for St. Patrick's Day.
