Description
I wasn't sure if I was going to post this but it is a real head scratcher. I am standing in the middle of a nature preserve which is maintained to, as nearly as possible, conform to how the area looked before the arrival of Europeans. And there, nailed to the trunk of a eucalyptus tree is this bird house. It looks just large enough for a family of sparrows. At least the view from the entry is nice.

I think I used to live there! Nice shot!

As the tree is a Tasmanian native, I don't suppose it is particularly attractive to your birds anyway, and in the absence of Koala bears the box is a good idea I think! One of my neighbours planted a baby Eucalyptus gunnii in her front garden abour 20 years ago and now it dominates the road, shading her garden completely and throwing branches into the street whenever it's windy. In our district we're not allowed to fell anything over wrist thickness without permission, so there it stays. Lovely pic, though, Mark!

the gnawing on the opening reminds me of a similar bird house I had nailed to a towering maple tree in my back yard. I waited for weeks for a bird to move in and then saw the opening chewed. My dad got an extention ladder and climbed up to see what was going on and it turned out a flying squirrel had moved in. It was just as good as a bird only better. Every day my dad climbed up and handed little bits of food to the squirrel and after awhile it would climb down the trunk of the tree and eat from my fingers (while hanging on the bark...)

Is it available for the summer? It looks like someone named Doreen put it up there in 2007. Good eye and nice catch. Dana

It looks like Doreen did a nice job! How wonderful to have a flying squirrel eating from your fingers! Love the bark and the soft shadows of the branches! Excellent capture! Now you need to shinny up the tree and get us a shot of the view! ;~)

I think Dana is right Doreen did it. Someone seems to be living there so I guess the preserve didn't have to heart to foreclose on them. Wonderful picture.

This takes me back home (California) the streets around where I grew up were lined with eucalyptus trees and I just love them... Lovely photo. hope the sparrows are enjoying that view.
