Description

The oldest surviving structure on the site dates to the 11th century, although evidence exists of some form of stronghold predating the Norman Conquest. Edward the Martyr was assassinated here on 18th March 978.By the 13th century the castle was being used as a royal treasure storehouse and prison. The castle remained a royal fortress until sold by Elizabeth 1 in the 16th century to her Lord Chancellor, Sir Christopher Hatton.

My Saudi lodger thought it a disgrace..said it was a blot on the landscape and the hill would make a great site for a luxury apartment block!

Really cool looking castle ruin. You can almost picture a dragon curled around its remains. Very nice picture.

Corfe has to have one of the most recognisable profiles of any castle in the country, and you have captured that profile really well Wally.

I will always have a little sadness in these sights like my friend. There is a loss of the inheritances which will never return like. But that disturbs enb nothing the beauty of this monumental place my friend.
