Description

After finding wildflowers last Sunday, I went to Braunig Lake Park, just south of San Antonio. I saw my first bluebonnet of the season there and this lovely great egret. He wasn't to keen on being photographed, and none of my sweet talk had any effect. This is not as sharp as it could be, but I like it. In the 1960s, San Antonio needed more power for its growing size. Unfortunately they were in the midst of a 6 year draught, and water usage was a sensitive issue. San Antonio's sole source of water is the Edwards Underground Aquifer. They needed to generate more electrical power, but use less water from the aquifer. It was decided to build two new electric power plants, cool them with recycled water which was then released into two man made lakes. Braunig Lake is one of these lakes. It is a nice park with picnic tables, fishing, areas to walk and various animals including, on this day, a great egret! I got this info from, and more info on the lake is availiable here Thanks for viewing, comments and previous favs.

This is way cool! You caught him in his element. I like how the bird is framed by the tree.

L'airone bianco in un ambiente indubbiamente naturale !Bella cattura e bei colori, un volatile molto elegante non facile da avvicinare!Interessante spiegazione sulla formazione della zona. Buona notte , Lucinda. The white heron in a natural environment undoubtedly! Beautiful capture and beautiful colors, a very elegant bird is not easy to bring! Interesting explanation on the formation of the area. Good night, Lucinda.

I do like the way the tree and the bird are both so sinuous. And wonderful to hear that they came up with a sensible water plan.

I think you did a wonderful job of capturing him Lucinda despite his attempts to keep just out of range. Enjoyed the info you dug up also.

Love this shot of the waterfowl with the S-shaped neck, Lucinda! One would think that it would encounter great difficulty in negotiating its way through the dense thicket of branches that surrounds it. And thanks for the aquifer info.

Y'know, it really twists my brain when something bends it's neck like that!

Wonderful shot of a beautiful creature...so majestic. I like the way you even captured the ripples in the water. Great work lady! Thanks for all the history behind the lake too. Kudos!

Great shot, we have a few Egrets around here but I have never been able to get a nice shot of one. they always fly away before I can get close enough to get a good capture. Nice work

Gorgeous shot! I think he was posing quite nicely for you. He's a real beauty standing beside that wonderfully crooked tree. It's a stunning composition. It's nice to hear that an environment has been created rather than destroyed. Thanks for that great info.

A lovely capture of this very elegant bird and what a great idea on using the water wisely and making a great habitat for wildlife at the same time. It just shows you that if there is a will there is a way round these problems.

This is a superb capture. I love the mood of it and the way it accompanies the music I'm listening to. The soundtrack to Avatar has nothing to do with egrets and wetlands, but there's a particular sort of musical trope that James Horner uses so often that really works well with this photo. I love it when things come together like that, especially since I doubt that you were thinking of a soundtrack to go with this image! Or maybe you were...? At any rate, this is quite lush and I love the stark white of the egret so proudly emblazoned with that nice "S" curve in his neck. Super! Great addition of extra information as well.

I really like the neck on this guy. He's very elegant and self assured. The whole picture is perfect; I like the woody, swampy environment and the way the heron just stands out with that sharp white. Really great work.

I love the contrast between that stoic bird and the tangle of branches and grasses. Lovely shot and interesting commentary. I learn so much at the galleries. Snowy egrets are one of my favorite birds and they're always a welcome sight. This is lovely.
