Here's the handiwork of what must have been a jumbo beaver; when he was finished downing the tree, he likely realized that the remaining log was a wee bit too big to tote to ye old dam in progress....(SC/GA border)

He was a bit larger than normal judging from the height of the bites. I've seen them drop trees much larger than this. Mostly they feed on the bark, but with smaller ones they will bite them into shorter lengths and push them into the water. They'll move those with 8 to 10" diameters fairly easily.
