Description

Same walk on Pompano Beach, Florida. Sea urchins or urchins are small, spiny, globular animals that belong to the class Echinoidea. They inhabit all oceans. Their shell is round and spiny, typically from 1.2 to 3.9 inches (3 to 10 cm) across. Common colors include black and dull shades of green, olive, brown, purple, and red. Since this sea urchin shell, was tumbled around, by the tides and waves, the spines have all broken off. What you are looking at are the stubs of the spines. They move slowly, feeding mostly on algae. Sea otters, eels and other predators feed on them. Humans harvest them and serve their roe as a delicacy. The name urchin is an old name for the round spiny hedgehogs that sea urchins resemble. Information from Wikipedia. ZOOM is a must! Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

This is beautiful! One of my favorite things to find on the beach. Many time I'd find them empty of the animal, but still with spines on...just put outside in the sun (very stinky!) for a few days to really dry out and then brush the spines off and you have a wonderful shell like this. Beautiful shot!
