Description


The cruiser 'Olympia' is the oldest steel warship afloat in the world. She was launched in San Francisco, CA in 1892. The 'Olympia' was decommissioned in 1922 and has been part of the Independence Seaport Museum Historic Ship Zone in Philadelphia. The 'Olympia' is a National Historic Landmark. On May 1, 1898, 'Olympia' devastated a Spanish fleet at Manila Bay in the Philippines, beginning the Spanish-American War. She also served during WWI. Statistics: Length: 344-ft. Beam: 53-ft. Its great to see these old ships. Isn't she so much better looking painted white than that ugly gray they paint warships these days? I didn't even know any of the white fleet were still afloat, someday maybe I'll win the lottery and get a chance to see her. Its too bad they haven't kept her up well, she needs a new coat of paint and what hapend to the brass and teak railings? Oh to those talking steel ships, I'm thinking this is the oldest full steel, the older ones may have been iron ships, many older ships were wood with steel over the wood, and older sill was iron over wood. Must have been a lot of people shoveling to move 633# of coal a minite.

A fine stern view of the Olympia and the USS Becuna (SS-319) a Balao Class sub that was later modified into a Guppy type. I have three shots of the Olympia in my gallery, but none of the Becuna. Glad you got her into the photo. Well done, Sig!
