Description

Had fun with this one combining two of my photos: 1. "SpaceShipOne" hanging in the ceiling of the hangar housing Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection (Paine Field, Everett, Washington). 2. A panoramic sky photographed out the window of an airliner enroute from Seattle to Kansas City in February. This little project has inspired me to add this poem well known among all aviators and spacemen and women. Hope it lifts you up along with me:) High Flight by John Gillespie Magee, Jr. Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds...and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of...wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up, the long, delirious burning blue I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace Where never lark, nor even eagle flew. And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space... ...put out my hand, and touched the face of God. Bill:) P.S. HOLY....... When I first saw this, I was thinking 'Now, how the heck did he get THIS shot!!!???' Outstanding work, Bill. You've expertly put these together into a spectacular image! Excellent!! I do believe we have a future in space, and it will not be accomplished by governmental red tape. Innovators like Burt Rutan will lead the way.

OMG, what a fantastic hybrid composition of the beautifully aerodynamic SpaceShipOne, contrasted against the partly cloudy skies, Bill! And the poem could easily have been uttered by the first pilot of the North American X-15, as it rocketed skyward.

OK... First up, I'm impressed at your work here Bill.. Really well done! Second, I had never heard of this project at all.. I know Mr Branson (The Virgin Boss) has a MUCH bigger airline type craft almost ready for testing... But not this... So well done on that as well.. And third.. WELL, done as well on getting a picture in the Gallery of the week.. Good work, my friend... Rob
