In grammar, title names with a French origin receive the feminine suffix -ess, as in waiter-waitress, steward-stewardess, warrior-warrioress. Latin titles loses the masculine 'o' and receives -ix, so Gladiator becomes Gladiatrix. Woman did (rarely) enter the profession in Roman times as a 'special attraction' and received the title Gladiatrix.
