Look around you. Cotter pins are everywhere!
They may not be pretty but they solve a multitude of physical problems. To hell with the wheel! My vote goes to the cotter pin as the invention that sets us apart from all the other higher vertebrates.

And may I add if were not for cotter pins many a wheel would have fallen off of it's axle.
