Description

This stitch of two photos was taken last Saturday on the St. Joseph Peninsula, located south of Panama City Florida at the southern most tip of the Florida Panhandle. The peninsula is over 10 miles long, and is well worth the drive to get there. Another blessing is it's off the well beaten tourist path that's not too far away at Panama City Beach. That's the Florida mainland you see on the horizon. The northern top half of the peninsula is a nature wilderness preserve, and the last 7 miles leading up to the point of the peninsula are accessible by foot only. This definitely leaves out the tourist crowd and other lightweights as well. But this time around I suppose Julia and I were in the lightweight category too because we didn't make the nature trek, although the reason was due only to time constraints. However, we plan on going back again in September or October and make the full 14 mile hike. Considering the unspoiled coastal beauty we encountered on St. Joseph's Peninsula before the wilderness preserve, we can only imagine what awaits us beyond the end of the paved road. Of course all of Florida's coastal areas once looked like this. Driving through the mass of drunken human flesh we encountered while making the mistake of checking out Panama City Beach was outright depressing (spring break). God help any sea turtles who mistakenly land there to lay their eggs. Of course, unfortunately those eggs will never hatch. But a lot of the rest of Florida's panhandle isn't very turtle friendly any more either. And like the zombie on YouTube says, "I like turtles". But they still hatch on the St. Joseph Peninsula. I've wanted to go there for years because it looks so cool on the map. But it's a hell of a lot cooler to actually be there. . . .if you're into that sort of thing. And if you are, then Julia will soon be posting some of her photos of St. Joseph's Peninsula as well. Good luck to the turtles! marshall

Here in Jax, along the Atlantic side of the state, there are well-respected signs and cordoned-off sections of the higher beach denoting sea turtle nesting during the season. I am always filled with a sense of joy that many humans do remember that this land doesn't belong to us. We should be gracious caretakers. Of course, we aren't always so kind to our fellow beings. Good luck to the turtles, I say, too. Just imagine what it would be like to be hundreds of years old swimming in the oceans of the world. The stories they could tell... Thanks for sharing, Big.
