Description

OK, so vultures are not the prettiest bird in the world, but they serve a purpose and are fun to watch. We have mostly black vultures here, but the red-head turkey vulture does visit. Recently, we had a turtle at the lake which appeared sick. I saw no external injury or wound, so I did not try to rescue it. If it was a temporary thing, then he would be back in the water by the next day. He must have died in the night as the vultures arrived the next day. Sadly sometimes it's best to let nature take its course. It was fascinating as they had an order on who got to eat first. By the next day all that was left was the shell totally picked clean!! Wow! We have a lot of bird action around our lake, several Great Blue Herons, White Egrets, Wood Storks, Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, and Mallard Ducks are here now. Some pass through and some stay. Also, our gator (5 ft) is back. I walked with in 15 feet of him and he behaved properly, by simply eying me. Note: "The black vulture and turkey vulture are protected by Federal law and cannot be killed without proper permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service". Wood Storks and Great Blue Herons are also federally protected. Patrish Swampy Florida

I prefer the Black Vultures, I think they look quite noble. I only see them in the air. Nice shot.

Fabulous vulture photo. So sad to hear about the duck. But that's life I guess. Great info and shot.

vultures are amazing and one bird I can watch all day. in the air they are masters of the drafts and on the ground they are masters of the clean up. Great shot.
