Description

In NZ We have many pristine mountains, mostly in the South Island where there are Alps and fjords and amazing scenic beauty, overwhelming in its spectacular loveliness. Yes It really is that good!! But this mounatin is in the North Island, and rises solitary above the foothills to the midwest, on a peninsula not too far from the sea. (In a long skinny country like ours, there aren't many places that are far from the sea. It's one of the things that calls us eventually home, though we travel the world.) Anyway. Mt Taranaki (Mount Cook) is a classically shaped volcano, not very easy to climb, though some energetic and brave people do try it; some lose their lives; some have to be rescued Difficult and dangerous), and many succeed. A word of warning: Don't ever under estimate the dangers of getting lost, injured, or in other trouble in our wild places. We aren't Europe, or Asia, or the US, and our challenges are different. What can look easy in the morning, can be lethal by afternoon. Again back to Mt Taranaki. There's a famous photo of this mountain which I have to some extent duplicated. But with one major difference. The lake that reflects the mountain is actually Lake Tarawera which also has a mountain, much smaller, but the same shape, and much much more deadly. One day I'll show you, and perhaps we will see the ghostly waka (canoe) being paddled across the pristine waters of Lake Tarawera in warning of disasters to come, and mourning for eruptions past. Yes I really did have the great privilege of seeing this just once, in the mist of very erly morning. It was...indescribable. The warriors, and the waaka, and the ores; but most of all, the silence. Wow What a polemic. Too many words.
