Description

...age is cathing up with this venerable, old log that has undoubtedly spent months and maybe years floating around in the salt water of Puget Sound. It would have begun life as a young sapling up some unknown river, growing for years into a magnificent tall tree. Then disaster struck...the disaster very likely came in springtime. This tree somehow lost its' footing and careened downhill, tumbling into the surging, rushing river that took all of its' passengers swiftly downstream into the sound. Or, worse yet, it could have been logged out of a forrest, unceremoniously stripped of all its' branches and shot down hill in a sluice to splash in a river and be on its' way with many other logs who met the same fate. And if all of this disrespect wasn't bad enough, if our log got water logged, it would slip under water into a vertical floating position and then be called names! A log floating in this helpless position is called a "deadhead"...can you believe that? As the tides changed and the winds blew, our log visited many a sound beach, sometimes staying just overnight, sometimes for weeks or months on end. But here it sits today, cracking, pealing, splitting, rotting and growing smaller and lighter everyday soon to be not even a memory except in this image...stored indefinitly on a computer hard drive. If it could speak, would it find this end fitting or would it rather have been left unphotographed by me and allowed to disappear like all of its' ancesters? Holy smoke...am I feeling sympathy for a log? What's to become of me? LOL Zoom leads to a lot more texture. Bill:) "It Only Costs a Quarter" thumb_2041282.jpg

But it is still a really useful support for all sorts of organisms..a bit like older people really. BTW, you should worry! I have conversations with my trees at home. and woodlice. and seedlings. and...and....

A little stream of consciousness? LOL, I'm surprised you were able to get it written down so succinctly. I was really swept away with you and the tree on the journey. Thanks. Beautiful old tree, glad you captured it.

Superb shot and speculation on the possible history of this deadwood, Bill. Actually, right off the bat, I was impressed by the fact that it looked like a palette with a mishmash of various colors of oil paint after the artist had gone wild. Either that or a chewed up pizza with all the fixings.

What wonderful stories this great log could tell and yours is but one of them. A super capture of this rather beautiful old log and I was interested to hear where deadhead came from as I've known a few.

Whether polishing it, burning it or growing it, wood is a substance that seems to connect us with all things around us. It is life, death, now, then, and our future. Stunning shot.

What a beautiful Upload. It is such an excellent capture and i love you little story alot. Dont worry, I had a long talk with a moth yesterday evening. I couldnt catch it to let it out, as when there was light, it flew around like a crazy, but I was grateful it was not flapping around when it was dark. Thats what I told it ;-)

I love all the colors on this log. That must be at the driftwood beach down by the marina. This is really fascinating!
