Description

Blackthorn is an unusual bush because - as you can see - the flowers come out before the leaves. The blue berries are known as Sloes. Sloes are EXTREMELY sour and cannot be eaten uncooked but are often added (with sugar) to gin. Prick them with a pin, add them to the gin and soak for a month or two, shaking gently every day. The gin goes a lovely pink colour and acquires a fruity taste (Blackthorn is related to plums). You can see from the bottom right hand corner why the bush is called a blackthorn - those thorns are long and VERY sharp!

Very pretty, and interesting facts that you've included. Have a great weekend.

The flowers are very pretty! Blackthorn has also been used in herbal medicine for sore throats, bronchitis, and to increase immunity. But if you are allergic, it can cause chest pain, and skin rash! Maybe that's a warning in those long thorns!
