Description

Namibia 2010 This is the 3rd image in the series that I shot at the Spitzkoppe in Namibia. This rock formation is called "The Bridge" and you can see some scale with my brother standing under the bridge. It was quite a climb for him on smooth rock but I will be ever thankful for his courage! I tried, but chickened out about three quarter way up! In my defence - I only wore flip-flops!!! Thank you for popping in and for your support in comments and favs on my 2nd Spitzkoppe upload yesterday. Stay well! Hugs Carin xx For those who missed the first upload, here are some facts on these mountains that I copied from Wiki: The Spitzkoppe between Usakos and Swakopmund is also described as the "Matterhorn of Namibia". It rises to an altitude of about 1800 metres and is situated in an endless, dry plain. The island of mountains can be seen from far away. The granite massif, which is part of the Erongo Mountains, was created by the collapse of a gigantic volcano more than 100 million years ago and the subsequent erosion, which exposed the volcanic rock, granite. San (Bushman) paintings can be found in various places, many in the "Bushman Paradise" under an overhanging rock wall.

Ain't geology wonderful? I love this image for numerous reasons, particularly because it's so darn good! I guess I just have to put another place on my list of places to visit! Funny how so many of them are in Eastern and Central Europe and in Namibia! Talk about a jump. Oh well. This is marvelous! And as for climbing such smooth rock, flip-flops probably aren't the best, but bare feet seem to work well, short-pudgy toes and broad feet are actually evolved for that, but that's a rant for another post. This is great work, as always.

Chip - I actually did try bare feet but you could probably cook an egg on those rocks - they were HOT!!! LOL...

A collapsed volcano and this rock exposed by erosion... I can look at your wonderful photo and let my imagination run...just think of what this countryside must have looked like 100 million years ago. Mind boggling. Neat series:)

I bet you shot hundreds of pictures in this area. If you find this place on Google Maps, and use the satellite view, it looks just like a photo from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

This is my type of place, I would love to visit somewhere like this with my camera. Trouble is both my legs are out of use for this type of climbing, I have trouble walking up the ramp at the supermarket nevermind a slippery rock slope. I do have a relatively good zoom though. Lol. They can't stop me dreaming! Be careful what you say to your children, One day they will pick your retirement home.
