Description

Yesterday maintenance was raking the leaves in the backyard when he uncovered this little guy. The poor little thing was so upset he was very aggressive but after he calmed down and I snapped a couple shots of him in the dirt, I picked him up with a stick and carried him to the picnic table. I love how his tail curled around the stick and he seemed fine with me taking his picture. The last picture shows the 'strike' he made as I was about 4" from his face. I had to get it from the side as the sun was so bright I couldn't see him in the screen. I did get one front on in the dirt but it was very blurry, he was so quick! He was just a baby and about the size of a large nightcrawler as it stretches out...somewhere between 4-8 inches (just a guess) As with most creatures I am not afraid of snakes, played with these guys as a child. As a totem, the garter snake means activity, opportunity...he fortells of help from someone to achieve your goals... BTW, I released him in a safe area and sent him on his way:-) I couldn't find any concise info on garter snakes so I picked a few words here and there to describe this creature. Common Garter Snake~~Thamnophis sirtalis The smallest snakes are no bigger than worms. All snakes are hunters, though. Small snakes eat insects. Garter snakes use a wide variety of habitats, from woodlands to marshes to fields and exist quite well in backyards and gardens. These snakes, like many other species, are variable in color and pattern; the basic color is dark brown or green with three yellowish stripes down their sides and back. They may reach lengths of two feet, but are typically smaller. They are completely harmless to people. Thanks for looking, for previous comments and favs! I will try to catch up a bit today in the galleries.

Lynn this guy is quite interesting...I think its so cool how animals all have their own special way of defending themselves. Snakes are probably the least of my comfort level in any animal to be around because I used to have terrible nightmares of them a good part of my life...but they are so very cool...thanks for sharing this my friend. I do hope you are feeling better today. Hugs

Great pics here Lynn and I'm glad you took so much care and released him in a safe area. Not sure he would have had the same happy ending if he had been in my yard as snakes are not too welcome there ;) Glad I got to see your newest upload before heading out for the day. Hugs

What a little cuty indeed. I like snakes, but I usually dont touch them, as either they blow smells at ya, or they are poisonous..Well, the 2 kinds I know about, that is :) I like these shots alot.

Fine collage of the serpent, possibly a leftover from the Garden of Eden, Lynn. I like the tortuous, undulating body as it slithers across the table top, similar to a sidewinder rattlesnake. But I don't understand why it looks like a colorless albino in the top foto, but has its normal coloring and patterns in the bottom two shots.

I love garter snakes...the only problem is if you pick one up as he's frightened, he'll vomit defensively! Needless to say, as a kid who liked making girls scream, that was a handy trick to know. That and garter snakes are just so fun! They're always nicely cool to the touch and almost velvet-like, unless they're about to molt, then they're just kinda scruffy. I also love the fact that they're toothless and are always threatening to bite, and if they do, they just gum you aggressively! Needless to say, I love these beauties and it's great to see such a lively trio of shots. Also, I hope you've had a fun birthday celebration! At this moment I'm offering a toast to you...even though it's iced coffee, but one toasts with what one has, and well...no hard stuff until the weekend!
