Description

If one thing defined Larry’s life it was travel. From the time he was seventeen and “borrowed” his parent’s credit card and flew to the south of France he was either on the move or planning his next trip. By the time my friend died he had been to eighty-five countries and forty-nine of the United State (he missed Alabama). Of course he brought back souvenirs from his adventures. One day I had him put on his Moroccan djellaba and Ethiopian robe and sit for a portrait. What you see below is what happens when you process your own film in the bathroom and then store the negative in a paper sleeve for thirty-five years. I’ve left it untouched because I liked the nineteenth century look of it and, let’s face it, I’m lazy.

Adventurer and nomad...something I wish I could have pulled off in my life. My adventures are so small compared to the size of the world. I admire Larry and his boldness to step outside of the box and live to the fullest. Of course, it would have been best not to do it on someone else's dime. :-) I also like the aging on this shot. It fits the subject so very well.

It's a really fabulous portrait! I think you were right to leave it untouched - it adds great character to it.

Larry looks like the world explorer here. It captures his thirst to discover that you have described. There is much intelligence and thoughtfulness in his gaze. (Jenny looks cute too.) The condition of the image did make me think of old pictures. About leafing through pictures in a flea market and seeing the faces of strangers and wondering if anyone could place names to their faces. There is something very sad about old unnamed photos in a flea market. But here you are celebrating a life and a line comes to mind. "In some loyal heart is your memory enshrined?" Larry lives on in your memory, pictures and stories.

You are not going to like this, Mark .. but here it is just the same. It saddens me that you put your camera down all those years ago.  I often imagine the fine works that you would have created in the passing time. Conversely .. I am profoundly happy that you have picked your camera back up again .. and find the termination from your job last year to be a gift from the gods.  Thus, even as I ponder what works you might have created in the past, I anticipate the wonderful works you are yet to create.  I embrace the news of your plans for this summer with a friend's true happiness. This is an outstanding portrait; it would be so if it were of a complete stranger, that it is of a dear and passed friend endowes it with a value beyond price. I am pleased that you did not attempt to retouch the fiber residue.  These artifacts are part of the photograph's history and it does lend an antique feel to an image which already infers the Nineteenth century. This is definitely coming home for my wall! Terry

A far-traveled man - a globetrotter. The picture please do not work on! Straight one because it an old admission is, distinguishes it. It is outstanding portrait admission and a beautiful remember. Thanks

A stunning portrait! It looks like we all agree, the artifacts definitely add to the beauty of this portrait. Sounds like Larry had a life well lived, what better compliment can you pay someone.

This is fantastic and I'm completely glad that you left it as it is...especially since I am one of those who digitally adds such artifacts to many of my own works. Ah...I should have taken up photography long ago and kept a backlog of negatives in paper envelopes. At any rate, however, this is a superb piece of work and I love the whole "other worldly" feel to this. Fantastic. Stunning. Marvelous. Quite sensitive as well.
