Description

In the early hours of Tuesday, April 13th around 02h50, my house was broken into while my son and I were asleep in our rooms. They threw a huge rock through my living room window - destroying a pane about 2m X 2m. A brick then followed I guess to get rid of the remaining pieces. They gained entrance through this gaping hole and stole me and my son's laptops amongst many other things. This all happened in a matter of seconds. By the time I could breathe again after the horrific noise that woke me and the initial adrenaline shock and had a look, they were already gone. We are very grateful that we were not harmed as probably in 85% of all crimes in SA, the victims are either killed or seriously hurt . The replacement of the damage and stolen property should be quick and painless. What concerns me though is the emotional scarring that might never heal. I am not coping well with this at all and will have to seek trauma counselling very soon. Did the police catch them? NO... Will they ever catch them? NO... (The police did not even attempt to take fingerprints.) They are free to rob again and again... The pic is just a small portion of the shattered window pane that ended up all over my living room floor and furniture. Stay well! Hugs, Carin xx

Very sorry to hear, Carin. I have no more that I can say - other than at least you have your camera. Great shot, Clive

Oh boy, that's not good at all... at least you guys have any weapons to defend yourselves? The picture is very good, but due to the actual circumstances, I dunno if I should say good shot or sad situation... Be careful!

I'm so sorry to hear this. My apartment was broken into about three weeks ago. As luck would have it, I was home at the time and caught the thief and called the police. Now I'm just waiting to go to court. I hope everything work out for you. I know it feels like a big violation and your sense of saftey has been shattered but you must move on and not live in fear. I'm happy to hear that you and your son are ok. :)

I adamantly stay WAY out of ANY political news issues or talks... But way over here in the states I have heard that certain races are trying with extreme tactics to drive other races away in South Africa. Hope that is not the case as I think it is the lowest form of humanity. Glad you and your son are okay. Stay safe and excellent capture albeit sad and perplexing...

Ghastly, Carin! Thank goodness you are both safe and unharmed. The last time I had my purse taken from my kitchen table was by a 'friend' of one of the lodgers.

Oh dear...so glad you are safe! I guess this is why so many homes have those big bars over all the doors and windows, which would make me feel like I was living in jail, but I can certainly see the need in some areas!

Carin, what you have gone through is terrible. Worse is knowing the people are still out there, as you said. You are in my thoughts and prayers. That you and Ray are fine (relatively speaking) is the most important thing. Take care, my friend.

WELCOME IN THE CLUB! :-( I'm happy to say that I live in a dangerous area of the town, but since it's controlled by the local crime lords I'm very safe as a long-time resident and no thief dares to come here and steal unpunished...

Glad you are all safe Carin. You are not alone. A few months ago 1 men walk into a lady's flat on the 2nd floor 2 doors from the flat that i own.Unfortunately she did not have a safety door and she left her door open. She ask the one that walked in what is he doing in her flat.He answered her wrong flat and walked out.As she walked into the door 3 of them stormed into her flat, closed her door ,gagged her and tied her up.They stole her purse, cell phone, all her money. Our neighbour next to our flat walked towards her door opened our safety door and flat door.At that time the 3 criminals walked out of the other lady's flat. Our neighbour looked in their direction.Luckily she were fast enough to go inside her flat, locked her safety door and threw her keys inside her flat.At that moment one of the Robbers grabbed her hand and cocked his pistol. The lady as well as her daughter screamed and they ran off.The police came to our complex but couldn't find the Robbers. The lady that was attacked had shoulder injuries.Family of hers came from Durban to pick her up and since then she didn't return and i believe she will not be coming back.Luckily my wife and kids did not open our safety door or flat door and they weren't outside at the time this happened. It is sad to hear such sad news and this will happen more and more as is predicted in the true word of God , but we must know that is not that God want it to be so.It is the work of the devil as it is all around us every second of every day. Carin i will pray that God to protect us all with His blood. God Bless.

All the above, sorry about your losses, happy you weren't physically harmed, but the trauma of it all will last over a considerable period. One feels so violated and vulnerable afterwards. All I can say, or add, to all this is: The police can't prevent this outrage, they only make out a report following the incident; hence, although somewhat lumpy and uncomfortable, keep a loaded revolver under your pillow at night. Also, if the noise of the break-in awakens you, keeping a shotgun handy by your bed is a good equalizer. And, if it's any consolation, a cool pic of the broken glass.

Thank God that you and Ray are OK and that Kayla was not visiting. Violence is not the answer but listen to what Harry said. Our prayers are with you! Thanks for the site mail. Dana and Josephine

Hi Carin I am really sorry to hear this news. I read many of the comments and I can't reccomend keeping a gun handy unless you are actually prepared to use it because if you are not then it can make things much worse. Using it could also make things much worse as most thieves have friends and family who can get quite angry so guns are a shortsighted solution in violent times. The only good solution in violent times is to remove yourself from the violent place and it has now reached you with a strong warning. Also, these same people may come back to steal your new stuff if they think you might have insurance. Physically you got off lightly this time but no amount of councelling will stop you worrying and being scared now you know they can come in while you sleep if they please. Or perhaps just get a couple of large scary dogs or maybe a lion !!! Take care Hugs Martin :)

Amazing photograph! Horrendous impetus behind it! I'm extremely glad no one was hurt! And I most certainly hope that no more brilliant photographs come out of something as profoundly wrong as a break-in, or anything else! Hopefully things return to normal soon, and though the police aren't likely to apprehend those responsible, one can hope that Karma catches up with them in a rather spectacular way that hopefully involves original owners reacquiring their lost property. Something similar happened during my childhood...twice! Once by a neighbor who was apprehended by police IN the upstairs closet. He got disoriented, forgot which window he broke to get in and decided to hide in the closet until the police left...thankfully the police came in through the same window, searched the house and found him! I wish that all crimes were as easily solved! And on the ironic flipside of that, this is a marvelous photograph, a stunning record of events that will hopefully serve as something of a trophy in the future, as something you survived and overcame!

I'm glad that everyone is safe! I myself have gotten in the habit of leaving no valued objects in site of windows. Criminals these days are brazen enough to walk right up, look in and if anything strikes their fancy, come on in. I find a motion sensing camera with audio to do better than any gun and are about half the price.
