Description

In the early hours of Tuesday, April 13th around 02h50, my house was broken into while my son and I were asleep in our rooms. They threw a huge rock through my living room window - destroying a pane about 2m X 2m. A brick then followed I guess to get rid of the remaining pieces. They gained entrance through this gaping hole and stole me and my son's laptops amongst many other things. This all happened in a matter of seconds. By the time I could breathe again after the horrific noise that woke me and the initial adrenaline shock and had a look, they were already gone. We are very grateful that we were not harmed as probably in 85% of all crimes in SA, the victims are either killed or seriously hurt . The replacement of the damage and stolen property should be quick and painless. What concerns me though is the emotional scarring that might never heal. I am not coping well with this at all and will have to seek trauma counselling very soon. Did the police catch them? NO... Will they ever catch them? NO... (The police did not even attempt to take fingerprints.) They are free to rob again and again... The pic is just a small portion of the shattered window pane that ended up all over my living room floor and furniture. Stay well! Hugs, Carin xx

I'm sorry for what happened to you. Fortunately, you are safe and sound! I understand that fear is strong and unlikely it will go away! I hope for you that all this bad situation will be resolved soon! Be careful, dear Carin. hugs

I am amazed you had the presence of mind to capture this image given what had just happened. I guest you are a true photographer. I am so happy to hear no one was hurt. I agree with the previous comments. An alarm system sounds like a good idea. A firearm is also a good idea but only to protect your self against harm. You say that many robberies end in injury or murder. My attitude is 'take what you want but if you mean to harm me you are going to pay a price'. Please stay safe Carin.

Hi Carin, Of course Tara has kept me posted on this miserable incident. The broken glass is very symbolic. I've only experienced this once and I naively entertained the burglar unaware that he was casing my house. I went out, he slipped in through a back window and took exactly what he wanted. This was in Monterey, California and the cops did absolutely nothing...took my report via the telephone and didn't even come to the house!!! So glad to hear that you and Ray are physically Ok. This defines "smash and grab". Hugs, Bill

My heart goes out to you. During the easter break we had a resident at my dad's place, a south african girl who, last time she was back home in SA, had her house broken into, a family member killed, and she was raped. She simply couldn't face going back so as a family friend stayed with us. I am so glad nobody was hurt in your case, and sorry for the loss. Nicely composed image here with those straight lines adding nice balance to the framing.

How sad for you and your son, Carin. Hopefully, the biggest fear is gone now! But I can imagine that something like that, has a big impact on you. And every sound you'll probably scares you. How is your son going, Carin? I wishing you both much strength, and I hope you get good help in processing.

Oh my God, Carin, this is horrific, I can so feel with you, on the one hand to be lucky to have no harm done to yourself, on the other hand the angst that stays because you home is no longer your castle... and furthermore the frustration about the police not doing anything to stop them... They try to stop them here, but alas there are so many coming from abroad, so fingerprints are of no use at all and in most cases they can't catch them either. So for my moms place I have a burgler alarm and I will change all windows this summer to a safety glass

That's terrible. I've been robbed twice, I know the feeling. No one ever seems to get caught. Great photo, it really conveys the feeling of being shattered and dismayed. Nice capture.
