Description

This small bridge connects Peale (left) with Wake Island, two of the three islands that form a horse shoe enclosing a lagoon that are commonly referred to as Wake Island. The island is off-limits to the public and only a about 200-300 military and civilians contract workers are housed there in support of a number of military operations in the Pacific. Wake Island is located about 19d 16m N, and 166d 35m E. There is no indigenous population due to the lack of water. Nowadays, rainwater is caught in huge catchments and is supplemented by a distillation plant. Distances (in statute miles) to the nearest islands are as follows: Honolulu, Hawaii - 2300 miles (3,700km) east Guam (Northern Mariana Islands) - 1500 miles (2,400km) west Guam itself is located about 1,300 miles east of the Philippines. Tokyo - 1985 miles (3,200km) northwest Kwajalein (Marshall Islands) - 700 miles (1,100km) south. Average elevation of the islands is 12-ft. The climate of Wake Island is tropical with yearly max temps of 95F and min temp of 68F. Mean monthly temp is between 76 to 83F. Average annual rainfall is less than 40 inches. In August 2006 Typhoon 'Ioke', a category 5 super typhoon with wind speeds in excess of 185mph (298kmh) hit the island. By August 31 the southwestern eye wall passed over the islands driving a 20-ft. storm surge and waves directly into the lagoon, destroying among other structures the bridge shown in this upload. This picture was taken in March 1990 and later scanned. View in this picture is toward the open ocean. Thanks for visiting, Sig...
