Description

Some Info: The Brown-headed Cowbird is a stocky blackbird with a fascinating approach to raising its young. Females forgo building nests and instead put all their energy into producing eggs, sometimes more than three dozen a summer. These they lay in the nests of other birds, abandoning their young to foster parents, usually at the expense of at least some of the host’s own chicks. Once confined to the open grasslands of middle North America, cowbirds have surged in numbers and range as humans built towns and cleared woods. Recently I received some emails from friends about my decision to turn off comments on my photos, So Im turning them back on and I'll try to give them as often as I can :) Rob

For a bird with such a mundane name he or she is an exceptional beauty.

It has a similar start in life to the cuckoo too, ingenious mothers I think. Wish sometimes I hadn't spent so many years rearing/loving my young, because in the end you don't get any thanks for it. I think I am coming back as a cowbird, great shot, thanks hugs Jane xx

Very nice. I have enjoyed seeing your birds. We don't have a big variety of birds where I live so it is very nice to see different birds!

A wonderful capture of this bird with his black hood. He is rather clever too not taking responsibility for his young.

You definitely have a way with birdwatching (!) and capturing them perfectly every time ! I will call you and 'Watapki66' the "THE BIRDMEN EXTRAORDINAIRE" This one is unknown to me - act's like a cuckoo would, very interesting. AWESOME... BB
